When in doubt, sit them out. Any player suspected of having a concussion must be immediately removed from play and may not return until cleared by a licensed healthcare provider.
Recognition
Common Concussion Symptoms
Coaches, parents, and players should watch for these signs.
Headache or pressure
Dizziness
Nausea or vomiting
Balance problems
Blurred or double vision
Sensitivity to light
Sensitivity to noise
Feeling sluggish or foggy
Difficulty concentrating
Memory problems
Confusion
Feeling "not right"
Recovery
Return-to-Play Protocol
A step-by-step graduated approach. Each step takes a minimum of 24 hours.
1
Complete Rest
No physical or cognitive activity beyond daily living. Player should rest and avoid screens, schoolwork, and physical exertion until symptom-free.

Light Aerobic Activity
Walking, swimming, or stationary cycling at low intensity. No resistance training. The goal is to increase heart rate gradually.

Sport-Specific Exercise
Running drills and other basketball-related exercises. No head-impact activities or contact.

Non-Contact Training Drills
Progression to more complex drills, passing, and coordination exercises. May begin resistance training.

Full-Contact Practice
Following medical clearance, return to normal practice activities including contact drills. Coach monitors closely.
6
Return to Competition
Player is fully cleared by a licensed healthcare provider and returns to game play with no restrictions.
